So we haven't posted for a bit. Things have been hectic around here. I discovered today that we are only 10 lessons away from three-letter words. Yippee!! We've been playing fast and loose with our lesson times these days. DD actually enjoys having "school" in the afternoon. Who knew? I've not been very chipper in the mornings, and I'm feeling a bit stressed about the upcoming holiday. Did I mention people will be eating at our house? It hasn't been thoroughly cleaned since our last family get-together. In August.
So, to the anecdote alluded to in the title. I was busy making a phone call when DD asked if she could have a parade. Sure, I say. Just get YOUR musical instruments, NOT my good cookware. She runs off, then a few minutes later I hear the tell tale signs of activity in the kitchen. I'm not alarmed, though, as I can hear that she has the metal cooking bowls. Good, I think. She can use those in her parade. A few moments later, I hear the beep of the oven. The child has mixed an egg and an indeterminate amount of flour and sugar into a pie tin, put it in the oven and turned the oven on. All in the span of 10 minutes. Probably less. I examine the globby mess in the pie pan and tell her I don't think it will turn into a pie. She was so bummed that I didn't have the heart to throw it out. I went ahead and baked it for 20 minutes and lo and behold it turned into a crustless chess pie. I could not believe it. I'm just waiting for her to get a little older so she can start cooking our dinners.

That is wonderful. My girls love to do this. My 7yo started the same way. Slowly, I have taught her how to make things rise and make them moist, and what kind proportions to use. She can now bake a cake, pie, biscuits, or cookies from scratch with no recipie which is something I can't do. My 4yo is just starting, so now I know to just let them go and teach the basic chemistry behind it as they grow.
They are amazing and cute, and you get to eat a lot of interesting things along the way.
enjoy
