I can think of no cleverly succinct title to sum up today. It was a good day, even an unusually good day. Consider that today was the day that I calmly accepted DD's gentle throwing of flour on her apron as she shaped pretzel dough. I think little Mama is growing up. Sniff.
She's writing and reading more, as long as I'm not around. Interesting. Very interesting. Naturally I stay out of the way as much as possible.
We read Grandfather Tang's Story and played with the tangram pieces today. DD worked on reproducing the shapes in the book. then we played Rummikub, a ridiculously difficult game. Even more difficult than Mancala. Yikes! We also had to stop this game in the middle. It was lunchtime.
We're also going through an emotional shift lately: more frustration, more crying, but also more responsibility. She really surprised me today. As you may remember, DD earns a quarter each time she makes her bed without being asked. Earlier, I had gotten a quarter ready because it certainly sounded like a bed was being made. It was not. Instead of pushing as I usually do, I just let the day unfold. Of course she discovered the quarter late this evening and just started sobbing. I merely reminded her that she earns 25 cents each time she makes her bed and that she still had time if she wanted. She made her bed, but refused the quarter. She said she couldn't take it because she had been asked to make her bed. She continued to refuse even after I explained to her that I merely stated the facts. Wow. I'm pretty impressed by this kid.
