Run, Run as Fast as You Can

We made gingerbread cookies in honor of the Christmas season today. They turned out alright, in spite of being a lowfat recipe. Lowfat does NOT go with Christmas. Of course, we ate one a piece as soon as they came out of the oven. After she finished her cookie, she told me "OK, Mom. If I ask you again about having a cookie, it just means I forgot and you should answer me politely." Wow. I was humbled for about 5 minutes, then went on in my usual mode. Too bad.

We made a numbers game today out of plastic cups with pictures of ducks taped to them and an egg carton. Each egg cup was assigned a number between one and ten. The object is to flip a coin/chip/ball of yarn into one of the cups, then put the corresponding number of teaspoons of water in your large cup. The person whose water level reaches the duck's bottom first wins. If only I had known about this game during the summer. Oh well. I'm sure we'll make up for lost time.

All Along the Watchtower

We're still dialing down from the excitement of Thanksgiving. We both enjoy having company and it's hard to get back in the routine, especially with Christmas right around the corner. We've managed to continue our schoolwork, though it remains to be seen whether my bold prediction of teaching DD to read by Christmas will be fulfilled. I thought it would be easier. Famous last words. But, she still likes practicing her letters (for the most part) and she loves her books, so we're good on that score. If I could just get her to remember that 13 comes between 12 and 14, I'd be doing well.

To Hibernate is to Hunker Down

Hibernation was the Nature Circle theme today and hunkering down was our game. DD told her class all about hibernation today, where bears get in caves and hunker down for the winter. She really had a great time today. They read a story and played in their "den" aka blankets over a table. Then they made a den of their own to take home from a brown paper bag decorated with paper leaves and rocks. They put shredded papers at the bottom of their sacks and cut out little animals to nest in the dens.

The rest of the day was a nightmare, as it is the day after the massive holiday weekend and all our company left. It was wet, cold and yucky. Thank goodness DH came home early. Now it's just countdown to bedtime...
